Chapter 23

Sabine looked around Town Square, giddy with delight. Towering oaks and rosewoods stood on either side of the wide stone promenade, and Spanish moss draped through the canopy overhead. The sun was low in the sky. When it sank, the trees would come alive with thousands of fairy lights and floating paper lanterns while soft bokeh effects illuminated the promenade and the fountain.

She didn’t know how they had done it.

Connor and some of his men—including the tiger who’d taught her how to sink a basketball—had worked magic. Her eyes followed Ren. He was helping set up chairs in an area designated for people with limited mobility.

He was wearing jeans and work boots, a navy tee, and a tool belt. Looking at him now, she would never suspect he worked in private security. Although, it fit. No wonder her the quiet tiger seemed so dangerous.

The show would begin at twilight, and people were already arriving. Sabine waved at Abigail Fenton, who was sitting on a picnic blanket with her mischievous meerkat trio. For once, they were behaving themselves.

Soft music filtered through hidden speakers as other families found spaces on the grass between the trees and settled down. It felt like the entire town had turned out, which meant the show was already halfway to being a success.

Sabine glanced at her watch. It was almost time to get dressed. She headed backstage, that is, the interior of the library. As promised, Jackson had moved enough bookshelves out of the way so they could set up change rooms and makeup and hair stations. There was also a repair station full of emergency sewing paraphernalia.

Sabine wound through the organized chaos and saw Jasper with his team. They had nearly finished transforming the models into visions of face and hair. Nearby, Avery and Daniel and the rest of the RSU students and teachers were busy making last-minute adjustments and fixes.

Lily and the other models were there too, nervous, Sabine was sure. She had butterflies in her own stomach. Usually, she was the one on the runway, but tonight she would be in front of a microphone.

Avery looked up and called Sabine’s name, voice panicked. Sabine headed over.

“We’ve lost two models,” Avery said. “The search and rescue team were deployed earlier today. Everything’s okay, but neither Alexia nor Chase can make it back in time. I’m not sure what to do. We don’t have enough male models to put someone else in Chase’s clothes.”

“Calm down,” Sabine soothed. She was used to this kind of thing. As she considered their options, the perfect solution caught her eye. “Go beg Jasper to model.” Now that she knew him, Sabine was sure he’d help, even if reluctantly.

“What about Alexia?” Avery asked. “Not just anyone can replace her.”

That was true. The design Alexia was slated to wear was highly tailored to her body. The reason models tended to be a certain height and shape was so they could all fit into the same clothes. But tonight, they were using local women, not carbon copy models, so it was more difficult to swap outfits.
